Labor & Sanctuary Parade
Sep 10 @ 12:30 pm
Labor & Sanctuary Parade @ Begins at Middle School Parking Lot | New Paltz | New York | United States

Unison Art Center is partnering with Redwing Blackbird Theater and several other Ulster County arts and community organizations for a Labor Day Solidarity Parade and Festival. We invite the community to come together to celebrate a special Labor Day event. This year, we will observe the indispensable connection between Labor and Sanctuary.

Sojourner Truth found sanctuary from slavery with abolitionists in New Paltz. Today, undocumented workers in the Hudson Valley seek sanctuary from exploitation and the threats of detention and deportation. Join us in honoring our histories of labor and sanctuary—the horror of slavery and the promise of the Underground Railroad—and advocating today for the dignity of all, including undocumented workers.

• 1-2pm—Start at corner of Manheim Boulevard and Main Street. Walk down Main St. to Plattekill Avenue and on to Hasbrouck Park, with puppets, brass band, dancing, and drumming!

• 2-4pm—Performances from Redwing Blackbird Puppet Theater, the Center for Creative Education, POOK, and others, along with appearances by Brian Obach and Dan Torres, food, kids activities, and information tables about different local organizations. Hasbrouck Park.

Dancing on the Edge by Adam Kraar
Sep 22 @ 7:30 pm
Dancing on the Edge by Adam Kraar @ McKenna Theater | SUNY New Paltz | New Paltz | New York | United States

Theatre Novi Most is proud to announce the upcoming first tour of a new play, Dancing on the Edge, about American modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and her lover, the Russian poet Sergei Esenin, following its world premiere in Minneapolis in early September. Both a poetic examination of Russian/American relations and a look at two remarkable historical figures, Dancing on the Edge begins with Duncan and Esenin’s first meeting in 1921 in Russia and through a mix of realism and fantasy, explores their stormy relationship, marriage, and disastrous tour of the US and Europe. The play is an unflinching look at a cross-cultural and complex couple who rode through the tumultuous birth of the USSR together with shared passion but no common spoken language. The play includes text in both Russian and English and has embedded within it several of Duncan’s dances and Esenin’s poems. Dancing on the Edge is written by Adam Kraar and was commissioned by Theatre Novi Most. It has been in development since 2011.

A bilingual play about the life and work of revolutionary artists, the American modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and Russian poet Sergei Esenin by Adam Kraar.
