Since Autumn 2006, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Duzine Elementary School and the Art Education Department at SUNY New Paltz have collaborated to create a successful program that introduces the children to their artistic community.
The students are introduced to Aboriginal Bark painting which are part of the museum's permanent collection. They are asked what stories they think are in the pictures after discussing texture, lines, shapes and subject matters. They are then told the Aboriginal Dreamtime story "Why Platypus are Special". They proceed to make their own bark paintings step by step. They develop a story with a moral around it as well and discuss it at the end of the day. The final result is a story with a moral of sorts that is displayed for all to see at Unison Arts Center in New Paltz.
