Art Spark

Our visual storytelling initiative for justice impacted individuals

In partnership with the Ulster County Sheriff Office's program IGNITE, to restore hope, value and purpose among local inmates

Unison teaching artists are teaching visual storytelling techniques to incarcerated women providing a new means of self-expression that can aid in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

A key focus of the program is to equip the women with new skills and knowledge applicable in the job market post-release. The creative and interactive methods taught by our teaching artists help participants develop technical skills in drawing and storytelling, which are highly transferable to industries such as advertising, film and gaming. Even if the women do not show interests in the arts, they will be able to articulate and visualize ideas.

Collectively, the program will enhance the women's reintegration, providing them with the tools and confidence to express themselves and understand the language of art — if not as artists, then in supporting roles — and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

This project is made possible with funds from the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.
